SyncML and supported handsets

To use MobileSynchro you need a phone which has SyncML software preinstalled from the manufacturer. Most phones have this already; please see our device database to see if your phone is supported.

If your phone is not on the list it might still work. We try to keep the list as up to date as possible, but new models are introduced with increasingly shorter intervals. If your phone supports SyncML, chances are high that it will work, please sign up with a similar phone.

Devices based on Windows Mobile and PalmOS, BlackBerry phones and iPhone do not have SyncML protocol preinstalled but you can install additional software which allows synchronization with MobileSynchro. You can download it from Nexthaus and Synthesis AG sites.

Setting up a phone to use MobileSynchro

Automatic vs. manual setup
The synchronization software is preinstalled in the phone but needs to be configured to use MobileSynchro. Most phones can be set up automatically. That means that we can send a special sms to the phone with the correct parameters.

Other phones might require to be set up manually. Information on how to do this is available during the set up process and later after you log in.

GPRS, access points, data accounts and profiles
The synchronization software transfer information over the mobile network. To be able to do this it needs some kind of data connection. The phone is using the same kind of data connection as if you open a browser to surf the internet, download ring tones and pictures, etc. Normally you will use GPRS as "data bearer" for this kind of traffic.

For most phones you will be asked to select "data account", "access point", "profile" or similar while performing the first synchronization. Here you should choose the same as used for WAP. If one profile doesn't work you can try another.

Other phones do not ask for the profile but automatically try to use the ones that are configured for that kind of service. You might need to reinstall the data accounts after setting up the phone to use Synkia.

All network operators offer download of GPRS settings on their web page (remember that if you change network you also need new settings). It is usual that data accounts are preinstalled in the phone when it is subsidized by an operator and sold with a contract.

Bluetooth and infrared
Information is transferred over the mobile network; it is not possible to use Bluetooth or infrared.

Using MobileSynchro

How to start synchronization
Synchronization is always initiated from the phone. Where you find the command varies from phone to phone, normally it is under organizer, communication, or similar in the menu. The correct process for your phone can be found if you log into Synkia.

On most Sony Ericsson phones it is possible to schedule automatic synchronization in intervals between every hour to once every week. To do that you need to go into the Synkia settings in the menu.

Other phones do not have this possibility.

Slow vs. fast synchronization
The first time you connect the server you need to transfer all information from the phone to the server. This is called "slow sync", because it can take even a few minutes to transfer all your data. Of course it depends on how much contacts, tasks and SMS'es you have in the phone.

The next time you connect to the server and the phone compares information, only the information that has changed is transferred. This would be new additions, modifications and deletions. This is called "fast sync", it should be seconds to compare and transfer only new items from the phone to the server and vice versa.

Using new phones with existing account
If you buy a new phone and set it up to connect to MobileSynchro account, the phone will be empty so during the first synchronization all data from your account will be transferred to the phone.

Synchronize several phones
It is possible to synchronize several phones towards the same account. If you add a contact on your work phone and synchronize the server will be updated, and if you then synchronize your private phone the new contact will be downloaded.

You can add new phones when you log into MobileSynchro.

The data on web is not on the phone or vice versa
MobileSynchro is designed to be as versatile as possible. However there are some things we cannot do anything with.

One is that we are not able to read information which is stored on your SIM card. If you want to back up this data you need to move it to the phone memory. How to do this is described in your phone's manual.

Different phone models have different data models for information. On a general Nokia you can store as many numbers of each type (mobile, work) as you want, but a SonyEricsson phone only allows one of each type. If you have a SonyEricsson phone and add two mobile numbers on web the second number might not be transferred to the phone.

Likewise, if you move data from one phone to the other we might not be able to match the type of all numbers. However we store as many numbers that there is room for, but the label might be wrong.

Plugins for e-mail clients

Plugins for e-mail clients are small, additional programs, which you need to install to provide additional functionality for your e-mail client. When you have installed the plugin, you will be able to synchronize data between your cell phone and your e-mail client.

Synkia works with all plugins which adhere to the SyncML specification.

We recommend Synkia Outlook Plugin. It allows you to synchronize contacts, calendar, tasks and notes. You can download it when you log in to MobileSynchro.

We can also recommend Mozilla Thunderbird Plug-in. It allows you to synchronize only contacts.

SSL Protection

We use SSL 256-bit encryption technology to protect your data. First of all it is used on our website and web-application to prevent unauthorized access to your data transferred to browser.

As the first company, we use SSL for encrypting SyncML data transmission between Your phone and our server. This way our data is protected in all cases when it is transmitted via the Internet.
